I believe that GOLD is a valuable basis for currency, and perhaps for the 'Perpetual Coin' because in a global recession / drought / economic meltdown, it would retain its value to the most wealthy of people [due to it's shiny appearance], and the most wealthy would be most able to help others with things like food / clothing / shelter.

The impoverished and hungry could at least come running with their gold in hopes of being fed and kept alive.

Gold retains it's value because it better represents real labor and scarcity, not it's beauty, although it is quite beautiful.
